Great product, beware of fakes!

I bought this adapter for my AT&T Galaxy S4, primarily for playing games on the HDTV. With a bluetooth controller (e.g. Sony Dualshock 3), you can turn your phone into a gaming console.

When I looked at this product on Amazon a few weeks ago, it was backordered from Amazon. I decided to take a look on eBay for some reputable sellers to get a hold of this product since most of the major retailers were backordered. I found a reputable seller on eBay with very high feedback selling these for $20. Sounded like a win-win situation, so I picked it up.

Even though it was a reputable seller, something didn't seem right when I went to use it. First, one of the features of MHL 2.0 with the Galaxy S4 is that you can use the adapter without the power adapter plugged in. With it plugged in, it should charge your phone. With the fake adapter, it did indeed work without the power adapter. However upon plugging in the power adapter, the phone wasn't getting charged. Also the overall quality of the image wasn't the best - on some of my TVs it would fuzz out. Without providing power to the phone, it will die very quickly making this less than ideal for a long gaming session.

I decided to bite the bullet and place the order from Amazon (to ensure you are getting a real device, order FROM Amazon.com, not a third party seller). Right away I knew the one from eBay was fake. First of all, the boxes were completely different. In the Amazon listing, it recommends you look for the "Samsung Genuine" sticker. This is a great idea. The fake one I received didn't have this sticker and there wasn't even an attempt to try to fake one. Also the fake adapter was very light compared to the real one, and simply felt cheap. However, the adapters themselves felt the same, so without looking at the box it is very hard to tell which is which.

Overall, when you find a good adapter, it is a great buy. I've tested gaming on the real adapter, and it's buttery smooth and allows my phone to charge while playing. My Galaxy S4 is now a portable game console!

Amazon is getting as bad as eBay when it comes to fakes.

I have opted to shop on Amazon more often then eBay with the hopes that they regulate their sellers and verify authenticity, but as I've found out more times than I'd like, this is not the case.

This adapter is an obvious fake, even though it is sold by a third party and shipped by Amazon, and prime eligible.

The packaging looks almost silkscreen printed. It does not have the glossy looks like all other Samsung packaging. It does not have the Samsung genuine hologram. It has a sticker over the product number updating to number to the latest AUWES model. But all this was fine...As long as this works the way it's supposed to.....but that was not the case.

I have a 2013 Sharp Smart TV with a MHL/HDMI powered input. So using this MHL 2.0 adapter with my Samsung S4, it should be charging my phone. I can plug the adapter into my phone and the S4 will mirror perfectly. It does not charge my phone. Didn't plug the charger into the adapter because I don't care if it charges that way. I have a MHL 2.0 HDMI input on my TV, so it should be charging. If try to access the mirroring controls on the S4, the phone says I have a "hardware error".

So I appreciate their attempt to sell a great fake, but is going back. Stinks because I want to stream NFL Sunday Ticket, but the season has now started. Thanks Amazon for wasting my time.

Received counterfeit item

As with many others, I also received a counterfeit item that did not have a Samsung hologram on the box. Amazon was very good at processing a refund, but there seems to be a glut of fake Samsung HDMI adapters out there. Check the box for the Samsung hologram and return the adapter if the box does not have the hologram. If you already bought one and are having issues with it, check the box for the hologram.
