3Looks Great, But Somewhat Slippery

By Dameon White

As an owner of the Galaxy S3 DualPro case before upgrading to the S4 I was really expecting for this product to match the 'grip' of the last case. Unfortunately, this case for the S4 is NOT the same feel as the last case. It's very smooth to the touch, leaving this with virtually no grip, especially when compared to the last one. I've even made sure to hold them both side by side and myself and friends agree, this case is not the same by a long shot. It's immediate when you put it in your hand. The feel itself is quite nice, but once you realize it doesn't hold to your hand, sort of makes it pointless. I'm not sure why they changed the feel when compared to the last one considering the last one for the S3 was perfect. Unfortunately, I'm now looking for another case that's stylish, but offers better grip.

UPDATED 5/25/2013
Just to elaborate on the grip a little more I imagine that Incipio likely decided to smooth out the material some to make it easier to get in an out of your pockets, which it definitely does slide out of my pocket a lot easier than than the S3 case, which I often have to use two hands because the material would stick to the inside of my jeans. I'm a smaller guy, though, and I'd rather deal with the phone sometimes getting stuck as opposed to using this phone with one-hand and when I have to stretch my thumb to reach the top of the screen (to use certain options in apps for example) the fact that the sides and back of the case are a bit smoother makes the phone often times slide down from my hand; not leaving me feeling very comfortable with it in those situations. Whereas the Galaxy S3 I never was concerned about that because it stayed in my hand nicely.

Overall, you're basically sacrificing/gaining something when compared to the S3 case before it. On the one hand you gain a case that feels a little lighter, warmer to the touch (yes, the Galaxy S3 case is quite cold and this one is more neutral) and slides in and out of your pocket a lot easier. On the other, you lose some grip. If you have bigger hands that can reach all areas of the screen without having to adjust your grip on the sides (i.e. changing the position of your hand in regards to if you're holding it closer to the bottom or top of the screen) I imagine you won't have any issues with this case. If you have smaller hands and you do adjust your grip to sometimes reach the top then this case will likely make you feel a little uncomfortable at times as you wonder if it might slip out of your hand.

I compared this case against the Spigen Neo Hybrid and Slim Armor and I feel that this case ties with the Slim Armor for different reasons and I wouldn't even recommend the Neo Hybrid. This Incipio offers more protection than the Spigen and will age better in terms of looks due to its soft touch finish. Whereas the Spigen has slightly more grip, but will age bad as its shiny coat is a fingerprint and scratch magnet and is slightly heavier than the Incipio. Overall, I chose to stick with the Incipio for the time being. While it's not perfect, thus far in my search it seems to be the best overall case for the Galaxy S4 if you're looking for attractive style with midrange protection.

5Great price on a great case for the Galaxy S4

By GMG

(TL;DR - I recommend. Good protection, good looks, minor and easily fixed issues with the fit.)

This is my first Incipio case for any device. The case is a 2-piece setup - a rubber "undercase" that covers the sides and back of the device & a hard plastic shell that goes over the rubber undercase & hugs the device.

I was a little confused by this setup at first, but quickly realized this is a pretty ingenious method of protecting the device. The rubber undercase is a shock-absorbing layer between the hard plastic outer shell and your device, it also protects the back & sides from any scratching from the plastic shell. After using this, I don't know that I'd go back to a single-piece case for any device.

The case itself looks great & has just enough of a texture that it's not slick or slippery and adds only a minimal amount of girth to the device.

My one quibble with the case is that the S4 has a very slight lip where the plastic around the edge of the device raises above the screen (preventing the screen from touching a surface if you lay it face-down on something). The rubberized undercase doesn't always come up over and catch on this lip so you may have small lines of the silver plastic showing around the edge of the face. This is not an issue at all except when the undercase doesn't stretch out completely to catch this lip & the rubber bunches up under the outer shell. Re-seating and stretching out the undercase over the lip minimizes this easily.

5My favorite for a slim, light case

By Diane K. Miller

I ordered four different types of cases while waiting for Verizon to release this phone (WHAT A PHONE!!), and some others since then. The Incipio is my favorite slim, light case. It is somewhat thicker but also much more protective than the typical slim case. The gray and white looks classy on a white phone. I also bought the pink and blue, the blue being much more vibrant than pictures show.

It fits perfectly and protects well, though I'm not going to test the validity of that assertion. It's soft and smooth on the back, so some might think it's not grippy enough, but I think it provides a good balance between grippy, while being smooth enough to slip easily into my pocket or purse. Nothing worse than fighting to get your phone out as your call goes into voicemail! On/off button and volume rocker are very easy to push thru the case. I love that the covering for those buttons is gray, so I can locate them easily.

I really don't care about the screen protectors they include with these cases. I used the included one briefly before I got the iSmooth matte (which I didn't like--distorted screen clarity), and then got the Tech Armor, which is perfect.
------------------

Quick rundown of other cases I bought:

Otterbox Commuter--more bulky and heavier than this one, but decent protection. I like that the ports are covered. Not very grippy though. Buttons are MUCH harder to push. Overpriced, outdone by the Trident Aegis. Weighs 1.5 oz.

Trident Aegis--my favorite of all. Grippy where it needs to be, rubbery on corners, ports covered, thick and protective. Similar to Commuter in protection, but better in several ways.

Poetic Atmosphere--pretty stiff, VERY hard to remove, slim and hard so less protective. Buttons are covered, but hard to push. Has a unique look, but it's my least favorite of all the cases I got. You risk dropping your phone when you try to remove it from this case. This is the only case I've gotten that I wouldn't recommend for anyone.

Caseology Slim Fit/Mercury--softer, very pretty with a glimmery appearance. Pops off easily, maybe too easily. But good if you're going to be changing around cases for different looks or changing out your battery often. Buttons aren't covered. Low on protective scale.

Boxwave Slim-Fit--inexpensive. Fairly secure on the phone, but also not too hard to remove (nice balance). Buttons are covered, but slightly harder to push. Rear side is matte, which doesn't show fingerprints. Sides are shiny, which makes it a little more grippy (sounds counterintuitive, but that's how it is). Probably my favorite of the truly slim cases, and it was the cheapest of all.

Maxboost PRO Premium Composite--bought this one for my son. Looks just like the UAG, but I haven't seen the UAG in person so there may be differences. I wouldn't want it, but my son likes it. Sort of a guy's case, offers fair protection and isn't too bulky.
-------------------

So while I would recommend most of the above cases, the Incipio wins for me in the slim category, and the Trident Aegis in the bulkier/more protective category. The Incipio is inexpensive for a dual layer case and offers more protection than all above listed cases except the Commuter and Aegis.
